Chapter 9:

In witching circles, it was a well-documented fact that certain creatures retained specific historic abilities. All manner of Fae learned to change into the form of a human to help them blend in and work their mischief driven by their mercurial natures. That was what made them so damned dangerous and mischievous. It was near impossible to ferret out certain Fae moles disguised as a human. From what Kennedy knew, there was no litmus test to identify a concealed Fae.

Brownies like Rosina were well suited as a house spirit. They used their powers to help and protect the people they encountered and grew to like. They would punish those who were disrespectful. Becoming vengeful if crossed was not unheard of. Even as helpful as her actions were, her motives were unfathomable.

The Fae aligned with the Seelie and Unseelie Courts and outcasts retained the abilities of their races. Many chose not to show off those powers to better fit in with humankind. Each individual had an independent motive for joining either court.

An Ogre, for instance, might find a home with either of the three groups, but they would be expected to live by the rules of each. Even as a member of the less malevolent Seelie Court, an Ogre would still be an Ogre, with all the powers, strengths, and weaknesses.

For all recorded history, there was a close tie between the Fairy ladies of the Seelie Court and the Elves. Fairies rarely showed themselves to humans, preferring to rely on their Elf lackeys for the heavy lifting. While the Fairies remained in the background, the Elves and other mostly Sylvan creatures worked to maintain the power over up to a third of the worldwide Fae.

An Elf warrior was more dangerous than any Ogre could ever hope to be. Where the brute strength and mass was lacking in an Elf, they had a cunning, speed, and natural magic flexibility unmatched by any of the other races.

In a meritocracy, Elven kind would be rulers of the Earth. Fortunately, with great power came great weakness. The biggest problem with the Elves was their arrogance. Except for the Fairies, all the other Fae pretty much hated them and the way they walked about like they were better than the rest. If the Elves ever moved to set themselves up as overlords, all other Fae would rise up against them. They were that hated. As a result, the vast majority of the Seelie Court was made up of Elves, with a few of the other races clinging on in a diminished capacity. Deemed second-class citizens in their own world.

It was a good thing the Elves never liked the Authority much. With humans breeding like rabbits, they greatly outnumbered the worldwide Fae population by several billion.

If the two races ever joined forces, any resistance would be over before it started. Any human-Elf alliance… the two superpowers… would usher in a new world order. A world Kennedy would never want to witness or live in. Human recklessness mated with Elfin arrogance would make reality unlivable.
